How do I recover a lost Microsoft Word document in Windows 7/Office 2010?
If your document was accidentally lost or if it was closed without saving you may be able to recover it using the built-in document recovery tool.
Step 1: Open Microsoft Word - click on Start/All Programs/Microsoft Office/Microsoft Word 2010
Step 2: Click on the FILE Tab at the top of the open Word window.
Step 3: Look down in the lower right-hand side of the list on the File Tab and click on the Recover Unsaved Documents button.
Step 4: You should see a list of unsaved documents in the default folder, C:\Users\YOUR_USERNAME_HERE\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Office\UnsavedFiles.
Note: if you've had a file previously saved in another location, for example, My Document, then you may need to navigate to that folder location to find your document.
Step 5: If you've located the lost or unsaved file in the default or other folder now is the time to open it. Click on the file and then click on the Open button on the lower left side of the open window.
Step 6: IMPORTANT, SAVE your document to a known location immediately. A known location should be a flash-drive or the My Documents directory.
Note: in some cases there might be some data-loss such as sentences or paragraphs that you were working on before the document was closed out. If that is the case then you will have to renter that information.
